Jimi Hendrix's second album followed up

his groundbreaking debut effort with a so-

lid collection of great tunes and great in-

teractive playing between himself, Noel

Redding Mitch Mitchell and the recording

studio itself. Wisely retaining manager

Chas Chandler to produce the album and

Eddie Kramer as engineer Hendrix stretc-

hed further musically than the first album,

but even more so as a songwriter.He was

still quite capable of coming up with spacy

rockers like "You Got Me Floating," "Up

from the Skies," and "Little Miss Lover,"

radio-ready to follow on the commercial

heels of "Foxey Lady" and "Purple Haze."

But the beautiful, wistful ballads "Little

Wing," "Castles Made of Sand" "One Rai-

ny Wish" and the title track set closer

show remarkable growth and depth as a

tunesmith harnessing Curtis Mayfield soul

guitar to Dylanesque lyrical imagery and

Fuzz Face hyperactivity to produce yet

another side to his grand psychedelic mu-

sical vision. These are tempered with Ji-

mi's most avant-garde tracks yet, "EXP"

and the proto-fusion jazz blowout of "If 6

Was 9."

One of Jimi Hendrix's finest original early

songs, "Spanish Castle Magic" is indeed

an amazing, magical piece of alchemy.

Utilizing a fabulous and devastating guitar

riff, Hendrix builds the song from there,

with a proto-heavy metal chord progres-

sion that is truly effective, and in this way,

the song is sort of "son of" his early clas-

sic, "Foxy Lady." Lyrically, it's a bit of well-

structured psychedelic fantasy, utilizing a

geographic area to help make its point.

Despite Jimi Hendrix's well-deserved re-

putation as an electric guitar pioneer, the-

re is little doubt that he was also capable

of masterful melodies, and "Little Wing"

is perhaps his finest.A gentle soulful

chord progression, based on an E minor

to D major shift, guides the melody and is

an accurate mirror of the title and lyrics.

Ostensibly a tender love song, Hendrix

conveys these emotions in a bittersweet

way that juxtaposes his stance as a hard

rocker. Instrumentally, it's also a fabulous

vehicle for his jazzy/psychedelic guitar

work, as well as Mitch Mitchell's jazz-in-

spired drumming. Easily one of the high-

lights of his second album (Axis: Bold As

Love) a terrific instrumental alternate ver-

sion (first take) is now available on The

Jimi Hendrix Experience box set. Stevie

Ray Vaughan (a true Hendrix disciple) re-

corded an exquisite version in the late

'80s.

If there ever was a song for the heady

1967 rock period that could be termed

psychedelic, it surely must be this mas-

terful ballad. Closing out Jimi Hendrix's

brilliant Axis: Bold As Love, this, the title

track, utilizes a unique lyrical metaphor:

Hendrix uses color association to define

mood and mood swings. Musically, the

song is equally striking, being a wedding

of psychedelic rock and Curtis Mayfield-

inspired soul. Filled with octave-soaked

chord changes and some devastating so-

los from Hendrix it's easily one of the best

performed songs on the album. An ama-

zing, early instrumental version is now a-

vailable on the box set The Jimi Hendrix

Experience.
