Alvar Aalto's breakthrough at the end of the 1920s coincided with what could be called a turning point in European architecture and de-sign. This was the period Marcel Breuer and Mies van der Rohe in the famous Bauhaus School in Germany conceived their first rational furniture of tubular steel and Le Corbusier in France furnished the library in the Church House with his metal chairs later to become classics.
As is often the case in the history of ideas, very simple and ingenious ideas in particular, no one recalls or knows in retrospect exactly how it all happened. But the product itself, the furniture dis-played at Fortnum & Mason's in 1933, made Aalto an international celebrity, shortly after its creation.
While international recognition as an architect was not lacking, it was as a furniture designer that Aalto, for a select British and Italian aυ-dience, remained the favourite for a long time (Triennale 1933 and 1936). He provided ver-sions of functionalism (or the 'International Style' as his friends Philip Morton Shand and Philip Johnson called it) so sensitive and firm that it could only be referred to as the Aalto style. In fact, this furniture was a premonition of Aalto ar-chitecture to appear later. In wooden furniture; insufficient as the expression is for conveying the essence of Aalto's chairs and tables, Aalto 'disco-vered' something, as did his contemporaries.
