Its impossible to talk about Buddy Miles
without mentioning Jimi Hendrix.
Best known as the drummer in Jimi Hen-
drix's Band of Gypsys, Buddy Miles also
had a lengthy solo career that drew from
rock blues soul and funk in varying com-
binations.
Buddy Miles debut at the Monterey Pop
Festival the Electric Flag which splintered
in 1968.
Miles split to form his own group, the si-
milarly eclectic Buddy Miles Express.
Signed to Mercury, the group issued its
debut album, Expressway to Your Skull,
in 1968, with Miles' fellow Monterey Pop
alum Jimi Hendrix in the producer's chair.
In turn, Miles played on Hendrix's Electric
Ladyland album. Hendrix also produced
the Miles Express' follow-up 1969's Elec-
tric Church. Hendrix, Miles, and bassist
Billy Cox formed Band of Gypsys, one of
the first all-Black rock bands. Miles depar-
ted Band of Gypsys in 1970, replaced by
Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell.

Disc 1
Buddy Miles Express:
Expressway To Your Skull (1968)
Although Buddy Miles' alchemical fusion
of psychedelia, blues, and soul did not
truly coalesce until his masterpiece Them
Changes, his debut LP, Expressway to
Your Skull, remains an inspired and origi-
nal statement of intent, a record that's
both timeless and an unmistakable pro-
duct of counterculture consciousness.
Each of the album's seven songs is a fas-
cinating montage of sounds and styles -
acid-fuzz guitar collides with zig-zagging
funk horns and shrieking keyboards meet
juke joint blues riffs head on. The mate-
rial is brilliant, its twists and turns naviga-
ted by Miles' deeply soulful vocals and
monster drumming.

Buddy Miles Express:
Electric Church (1969)
More than half of the original LP produ-
ced by the Master Himself, Jimi Hendrix.
Buddy Miles' second album (credited to
Buddy Miles Express) gets most of its at-
tention in retrospect for the role of Jimi
Hendrix who produced part of it and play-
ed on some tracks as well. On its own
merits, though, it's a fairly respectable
soul-rock album. Hendrix was referring
to his own material as "electric church"
music on some occasions in the late 60s,
and likely he had something like the soul-
funk-rock fusion of Band of Gypsys in
mind when he conceived this. Of course
Miles played in Band of Gypsys. His wri-
ting and singing benefit from not being
placed within the context of a band in
which Hendrix was primarily responsible
for those functions, as was the case on
the Band of Gypsys album. The songs
are mostly vehicles for Miles' high soulful
vocals and the energetic funky arrange-
ments, but as such things go they're pret-
ty solid and pleasurable. "69 Freedom
Special" is a true highlight which has so-
me good Hendrix wah-wah licks and
"Miss Lady," on which Jimi plays in a mo-
re conventional R&B style. While the ma-
jority of this is feel-good and brassy Miles
does show he's capable of handling more
tender soul melodies and sentiments in
"Cigarettes & Coffee" and "My Chant."

Disc 2
Buddy Miles:
Them Changes (1970)
This 1970 release by former Band of
Gypsy's drummer Buddy Miles is, quite
simply, one of the great lost treasures of
soul-inspired rock music. From the funky
drive of the title track to Miles' plaintive
singing on "I Still Love You, Anyway" and
Greg Allman's "Dreams," the album is fil-
led with the best qualities of both genres.
Not only does Miles prove himself to be a
great interpreter of songs, but with the tit-
le track and "Heart's Delight," he demon-
strates his ability to write solid material on
his own. Complemented by the Memphis
Horns, Miles' songs soar and swing as
hard as any Stax release, and his voice
combines the nuance of soul singing with
the grit of rock. Them Changes is defini-
tely a true masterpiece.
