Roderick Alleyn was educated at Eton and joined the CID from the diplomatic service. In the course of a successful career (Alleyn eventually achieved the rank of Chief Superintendent) he has travelled widely, often accompanied by his longtime associate, Inspector Fox.

Roderick Alleyn is married to the celebrated painter, Agatha Troy. They have one son.
