Winnipeg's (Canada) Streetheart played

hard guitar and keyboard-mixed radio rock

throughout the course of the late '70s and

early '80s, and are comparable to country

mates Prism and Trooper, who flourished

at around the same time. Led by guitarist

Paul Dean and Matt Frenette, who later

formed Loverboy, Streetheart's straight-

ahead approach of energetic, highly ani-

mated guitar throttle somehow failed to

gain momentum outside of Canada. The

Essentials taking tracks from four of their

best albums. Streetheart's most interest-

ing piece comes in the form of The Rolling

Stones' "Under My Thumb," blazing with

whirlwind keyboards and highlighted by

the screaming vocals of singer Ken Shields.

With much of their back catalog out of print

this album still stands as the best grouping

of Streetheart's tunes. "Action," the pulsa-

ting, atmospheric opening track, is hard to

get out of your head. It was all over Cana-

dian FM radio for a time and is the prairie

band's signature tune.

In 1975, vocalist Ken Shields, keyboard

player Daryl Gutheil and bassist Kim Sin-

naeve formed the band Wascana. After

being renamed Witness, the group beca-

me Streetheart when guitarist Paul Dean

and drummer Matt Frenette joined in 1977.

The band released Meanwhile Back in Pa-

ris the following year and Under Heaven

over Hell in 1979, but Frenette and Dean

dropped out soon after to found Loverboy.

Streetheart played together until 1984, re-

leasing Quicksand Shoes (1980), Drugsto-

re Dancer (1981), Action: Best of Street-

heart (1981) and Dancing with Danger

(1983).
