"The year 1991 is devoted to the jubilee of Gediminas, the founder of Vilnius, the Grandthukia's Lithuania. It is highly symbolic that just in this year we witness such historic events as recognition of Lithuania's independence by the countries of world.

In the years when the Grand Duke Gediminas ruled over Lithuania it was a strong and flourishing state. The legend says In the years when the Gediminas saw in his dream is a symbol of world-wide fame foretold to the city of Vilnius. The wise Duke invited to his city craftsmen and artists who were to bring fortune and welfare to Lithuania with them. Such historic parallels may be drawn between historic events of the past and the present day.

To much regret, Gediminas year will be celebrated without a monument to the Grand Duke, though several years ago a competition was held to reveal its best project. An original monument to Gediminas has been made by bookplate artists. Competition raised an international competition GEDIMINAS-650. That 120 authors from 24 countries of the world participated in it. The geography of works presented ranges from Australia, Mexico, Brasil to our nearest neighbours Latvia, Estonia, Poland, the Ukraine, Russia.

The majority of authors link in their works the historic theme of Gediminas with images of outstanding people of the past and present. Gediminas and Vilnius are often united into a whole. The book-plate, however, as a genre of art rejects direct literary interpretation requiring instead concentration of thought and image.

The international competition, as one of the events devoted to the historic year of Gediminas will become a grand occasion not only for the authors who took part in it, but also to the viewers who will attend the exhibition of competitive works."
