The Ghetto of Venice
(kirja Venetsiasta englanniksi, historiaa jne... Venetsia)
The book is in English
«The Jewish people must all live together in the Corte de Case, in the Ghetto near San Girolamo»: such ordains the Condotta, the agreement ratified on March 29th, 1516, between the Serenissima Republic and the Jewish community of Venice. With this law comes the birth of the first "ghetto", a word most likely derived from
"getto"
", the Venetian term for "foundry". Forced to earn a living by lending money or selling used goods, taxed more heavily than other Venetians, and persecuted by the Inquisition, «li Giudel» or Jews of Venice - of German, western or eastern origin - did not have it easy. Nonetheless, in the span of just a few decades, "li Giudei" of Venice were able to overcome their obstacles and establish a tight network of trade which involved all of those states bordering on the Mediterranean Sea. In this new edition of The Ghetto of Venice, enriched by the insertion of a valuable iconographic ad-dendum, Ricardo Calimani describes the everyday life, the customs and the religious ceremonies of this well-defined community able to travel the slow and difficult path towards integration ano emancipation. Through a close analysis of the writings of rabbis, intellectuals, humanists and simple merchants, Calimani enables his readers to discover one of Venice's most vibrant and enchanting neighborhoods; the city's central point of exchange, where dit-ferent peoples and different cultures could come together.
