Veritas Bead Cutter

This is a speciality tool, no longer produced and not available for sale from any retailers for many years. It's used to produce reproductions of beading details on cabinet and casework, drawer fronts, jewellery boxes and anything featuring cosmetic beadwork.

The wide range of cutters are still produced and readily available as Veritas now sell a simple bead cutter which resembles a spokeshave. This one however includes adjustable handles and a fence which will follow straight and external radiused edges when configured one way, or internal radiused edges when rotated 180 degrees. The adjustable handle ensures there is more clearance to be able to cut the beading in tighter spaces.

This tool is close to new condition, but when I used it for one project a small portion of the powdercoated finish flaked from the edge, just in front of the sole and cutter. You can see this in the pictures if you look closely. It doesn't affect the functionality of the tool in any way. You'll also see a custom shaped cutter, the one I used on my project, mounted in the tool. It should be pretty obvious to a woodworker how it works from the pictures. Otherwise the tool is in fine condition.

Note that custom cutters can also be made using common card scrapers, but I'll include a few 'blanks' to get you started. These are easily filed to shape allowing you create your own profiles or to match a cutter to an existing radius or profile, making repair and reproduction work very straightforward. The entire process is also really fast, and makes no noise and just a little shavings and dust. A nice tool to use for a particular type of work.
