Father of the concept of biodiversity through his identification of nearly 6,000 plant species and 4,400 animal species, his classification is part of a historical context spanning several millennia where the notion of evolution of species did not yet exist, since the classification of the Greek philosopher Aristotle, on the one hand, and the biblical doctrine of creationism, on the other. It is therefore fixist and constitutes the dominant model of the relationship of anatomical proximity between species until the 19th century. The classification integrates the concept of evolution following Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck, founder of transformism.
